Minimals: A Modular and Adorable Line of Animals

Creating a Pantone of Colors, Animals, Clothes, and Archetypes

Inspired by the designer's difficult times in Berlin, Sebastián Burga created the first version of Minimals in 2008. Struggling to pay rent, he decided to sell drawings of cute animals in Mauerpark. Although the results were not great, he discovered something special about these silly creatures. Upon returning to Peru, Burga felt ready to create a complete toy set based on them. Last year, in collaboration with Claudia Hermosilla, he recreated a whole universe of Minimals, complete with false product lines, posters, magnets, and other merchandise, as if they were manufactured by a German industry.

What sets Minimals apart is their modular design, allowing anyone to build their own animals using interchangeable modules. Each animal has a unique set of characteristics, but they all share a recognizable modular code. For example, Herr Bytes, the crocodile, has a mouth with matching teeth in a cylindrical shape, which can also be used as a skateboard for any other Minimal. This modular approach adds a layer of creativity and customization to the play experience.

Made from wood and painted with duco, Minimals are not only visually appealing but also durable and safe for children. The primary color palette and geometric shapes give them a modern and minimalist aesthetic, while still retaining their cute and playful nature. The collection includes animals such as Frau Gramm, the chicken, and Herr Jahr, the baby bear, each with their own unique dimensions and characteristics.

Throughout the design process, Sebastián Burga conducted extensive market research, observing people's reactions to each Minimal. This allowed him to improve the designs based on popularity and feedback. The result is a collection of animals that resonate with people on a personal level, encouraging them to find themselves between the Minimals.

In recognition of its outstanding design and innovation, Minimals was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Toys, Games, and Hobby Products category in 2013. This prestigious award celebrates the top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that showcase excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
